Rising Moon Ranch Consulting - Foal Color Calculator/Reports

Less than satisfied with the available free foal color calculators I had come across, I set out to create my own. I disliked that brown base coat (click here for testing), pearl dilution (click here or here for testing), and linkage/crossover were missing from the calculations. Only finite sire/dam color combinations were offered, and I often found my unique horses' colors were not even on the list. I wanted to be able to specify any possible combination of color genes for each parent, and have all genes calculated as accurately as possible into the resulting foal colors. I also desired output displayed in a consistent and predictable sort order, rather than just by descending percentages (which left me scrolling and searching to find my chances of any particular color combination that I may be interested in seeing.) And I wanted my program to take into account genetic linkage (and crossover) for extension to roan and/or tobiano genes, and lethal combinations of genes. It was a challenging process which took a long time to complete to my satisfaction, but I now have such a database and reporting program up and running!

My foal cross calculator currently includes all possible color combinations of Extension, Agouti (including seal Brown), Grey (aka Gray), Cream (including Pearl), Dun, Champagne, Silver, and Roan. It also provides for the white patterns of Tobiano, Frame Overo, Sabino Overo, Splash Overo, and Appaloosa (Lp). Any combination of these genes can be specified for each parent, as well as any known linkages, the desired crossover rate (if other than the 5% default), and whether extension, roan, or tobiano genes are known to have been inherited by sire or dam of each of the parents.

I generate results to include a summary page for sire/dam with a gene-by-gene breakdown for the foal, as well as detailed reports by phenotype (visual appearance) and also genotype (specific genetics). My reports also clearly differentiate between homozygous and heterozygous combinations for each gene, which I like to see broken out, but other calculators often lump together. Each detailed result is assigned a descriptive phenotype name to indicate the color/pattern combination, and its corresponding percentage, for every distinct combination possible. I output all results in the same sort order, first by base coat, then starting with homozygous then heterozygous then not present, gene by gene, as listed above. So you will always see a classic grulla champagne paint before a sorrel solid, for instance, regardless of the percentage chance of each. (Note: you can indicate if you would prefer the results sorted by descending percentages possible instead, see below.)

Click here to view an extensive (17 page) sample foal color report.

This sample includes a 1 page summary by genes, a 9 page combined phenotype report, and separate genotype reports by colors (6 pages) and patterns (1 page).

Obviously the results will be the most accurate in cases where the parents have been tested and most or all genetics are known (and even more so in cases where linkages are known for roans and/or tobianos, so that can be factored in as well). If it's necessary to guess at any genes (such as agouti on a sorrel mare), it's advisable to include one dominant and one recessive for the gene pair, to allow for the greatest number of possible results to be included. If linkages are unknown, they can be left off for more generic results too. For simple crosses all colors and white patterns can be combined into one phenotype and one genotype report, but in the case where many genes are at play and the reports would be very long, they can also be broken down to just colors and just white patterns, for more manageable report sizes.

I am offering a combined (3+ pages: summary + phenotypes + genotypes) foal color report for $7.50 USD, which basically just covers my time to enter the information and generate/email the resulting PDF reports to the owner. Or if preferred, just page 1 (summary info only) is available for $5.00 instead. Please complete the fields for the foal cross you'd like to see, and use the paypal button below to pay and submit your info/request. Thank you.

* A note about "Sabino" vs "Dominant White":
There have been recent research discoveries, and ensuing debates, about a number of white spotting pattern mutations being called "Dominant White" (W). They visually appear like what most would describe as Sabino, but test negative for the Sb1 gene, and "behave" differently as well. These newly discovered mutations are believed to be embryonic homozygous lethal in most cases, and can result in a nearly all white horse in heterozygous form, whereas Sabino1 (Sb1) horses are viable in homozygous form, and typically only result in a nearly all white horse when 2 copies are present (Sb1/Sb1). For the purposes of this calculator at this time, until more is documented and understood, please use the "Sabino Overo" gene for either instance, and note in the Comments section below if you believe the horse is actually Dominant White rather than Sabino, and would like your reports to reflect this naming convention instead. Thank you.
